In 2006-07, the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre’s (PPC) Research Department collected data to determine the core competencies and skills required by civilians working in peace operations. This team is currently engaged in interpreting its findings with an eye toward developing a process and system for certifying peace professionals.
The need for well-trained personnel in post-conflict environments can not be understated. A standardized program of study for professionals who work 'in harms way' will help professionals receive all of the training they need to do their jobs safely.
Our researchers have surveyed stakeholder groups in 5 key areas to work toward the establishment of a peace professional certification program: civilian humanitarians, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canadian Forces, young Canadians and locals in Bosnia–Herzegovina who experienced the international peace operation in the 1990s.
