Women in Peace Operations Seminar
On October 12 and 13, 2009 the Pearson Peacekeeping Centre (PPC) hosted a Women in Peace Operations Seminar in Lusaka, Zambia. Twenty-seven police officers (7 men and 20 women) from six Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries (Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zambia) took part in the Seminar.
The aim of the seminar was to discuss challenges to the participation of women in peace operations and to identify preliminary strategies for addressing these challenges. The seminar helped increase the awareness of the participants on the issue of peace operations and the operational advantage of women’s meaningful participation in peace operations. The seminar also helped raise awareness on UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 1820 and other regional legal instruments as a way to promote the integration of more female police officers to complex peace operations.
This project was made possible with funding from the Federal Republic of Germany, Foreign Office.

Strategy Session on UN Security Council Resolution 1820
The Pearson Peacekeeping Centre attended a strategy session on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1820 in New York, organized by The International Women's Tribune Centre (IWTC).
The Pearson Peacekeeping Centre participated in discussions and provided some insights, along with Global Action, on the role of peacekeepers in implementing Resolution 1820 and in preventing and responding to sexual violence.
The aim of the strategy session was to analyze the Secretary-General’s latest report on Resolution 1820 and other official positions from member states and UN agencies, and to formulate complementary or alternative courses of actions to make Resolution 1820 an effective tool for ending sexual violence in conflict-affected communities.
Women's peace advocacy groups from Burundi, Canada, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Liberia, Nepal, Sierra Leone, The Netherlands, and the United States also attended the session.
The IWTC developed a blog to ensure wide dissemination of the discussions throughout the week with information on Resolution 1820, the different sessions and the participants and resource people.
